Juried Exhibition: Under Pressure

Curated by Carrie Patterson

The Painting Center is seeking submissions for the juried group exhibition titled: Under Pressure curated by artist Carrie Patterson. The exhibition will be held in person and on Artsy from June – July 2026, with an opening reception TBA. Under Pressure will feature artwork created by teens ages 13- 22 years of age who dare to hope, create, document, and dream during a time of immense change and instability.  Throughout time, artists have received rigorous training through apprenticeships, government funded schools, private lessons, or alternative art schools. Beyond art programs, scholastic awards, and county fairs, there are not many options for teens to compete. And yet, every professional artist knows that exhibiting your work and competing with other artists challenges us to be better creators. In 2025 the next generation is inheriting a world of immense pressure: climate change, political upheaval, educational instability, violence, and inequity. What does the weight of a world under pressure look like? How does one translate a message relevant for our times into art? Sharing with humanity what we think, feel, and see is sometimes the most relevant act we as individuals can do. This exhibition invites young artists to rise up and accept the challenge to create in a world Under Pressure.

CARRIE PATTERSON IS A VISUAL ARTIST WORKING IN MARYLAND with studios in Silver Spring and Takoma Park. HER ARTWORK CONSIDERS HOW COLOR, FORM, AND LINE METAPHORICALLY MEASURE THE HUMAN CONDITION AS EXPERIENCED THROUGH THE BODY.
