There are 10 paintings in this body of work titled Quilt Paintings. In 2011 Patterson began a series of “painted constructions.” These pieces proportionally and conceptually were based off of the temporary billboards on Rt. 5 in St. Mary’s County. The billboards are a part of the vernacular architecture that is surrounded by landscape. Sometimes these billboards fall down, leaving holes where the landscape can be seen as part of the sign. Many barns in the south are also falling down, visually combining with the landscape. Patterson began using found barn wood combined with manufactured wood from Lowes. From the front, these paintings are reminiscent of patterned quilts. The depth of each painting makes it possible for them to function as shelf paintings and stand alone rather than hang on the wall.
